Living out here in the wild wild West, I miss all the shortlines I used to chase down & shoot back in the Midwest and South, but I'm reacquainting myself with Western railroading- no wimpy choo-choos here!

Welcome to the moderator's chair. This forum has been kinda quiet up to now. I am glad to see some new activity.

One area of rail fanning that doesn't always get the attention it deserves if that of the railroad museum. Museums may not have the challenge and excitement of the hunt for live action, but they are important in the preservation of our rail heritage. (This is why you see most of my pictures are taken at some of these museums.)

However, I do try to capture the essance of railroading wherever I travel.

Good idea- I've visited RR museums in Checotah, OK, a town not far from Russell, KS
(it claims to be Walter Chrysler's hometown),
Hugo, OK, Springfield, MO (the Frisco RR Museum, Mecca to me http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif ), Colorado RR Museum in Golden, CO and the Casey Jones RR Museum in Jackson, TN. All of them were interesting, and I bought momentos from each one (and took shots at each one).
So, sounds like a new topic- your favorite railroad museum, where it is, what you like about it, etc.
How about it, gang?

In Connecticut, there are 6.5 museums devoted to rail. Four are railroad, two are light rail (trolley), the half is a heavy machinery museum with a few pieces of rail equipment and about a quarter mile of narrow guage track.

I am a member and volunteer at the Danbury Railway Museum, Danbury, CT. See my posting under Railfan Pictures for access to pictures of this and other museums.

Hey Bob~

Thanks for checking out my site. I moved it to trainweb, and have made some vast improvements in the content (the layout still isn't much to look at). The new link is at the bottom of this post. I looked at your site, too. Nice use of the little train gifs.

I could go on forever about all the different areas I like to take pictures. I'm mainly familiar with western Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge. Time and money prevent me from venturing too far from home. BNSF doesn't have a mainline in my area (they do have a branch line), but there is one in the Gorge, just about three hours away. UP's major north-south line goes through my town, so most of my pictures are of UP. I get tired of all the yellow running around here, I really miss SP.

Thanks for the welcome, FriscoBob!! I'll shovel my nine tons of coal, best I can. I road the Frisco once, but the T&P (oil fired) 2-10-4's were the closest. I saved a newspaper and had breakfast with the west bound crew every morning at the Railroad Cafe on the southside of South 1st. Street in Abilene, Texas. They appreciated the paper. (Don't tell but http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif they let me ride in the cab from Abilene to Big Spring, & put me in the cab on another crew to come right back home. Was a big thrill to a 15 yr old!Wouldn't NTSB scream today? Ha.
