Is there a RR that lets a railfan run a diesel locomotve? Preferably within a days' drive of central NJ?

Jeff .. the only one that I'm aware of is located in the Quincy-Portola area of California. For $75 you can take an old F7 around an oval track.

the essex valley RR in Essex CT will give you a day's lesson and actually operating time in the cab of oops! not a diesel loco but a fire breathing steam locomotive. It costs about $350.00 and you need to reserve about 6 months in advance.
