I have moved this topic to the photography section as it should receive a greater response here.

We have a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 3300C 8x11" flat-bed scanner. It is easy to use and will copy a car laying on the glass, photo, even a pencil note on scratch paper. Very easy directions.

I like the HP 5300Cse. It has high resolution (1200 dpi) which is good for copying photos. It also can copy 35mm slides with a $20 attachment.

Have a look for a Canon (if available). I believe the HP scanners are re-engineered Canon (new bodies) as HP doesn't make a scanner, per say.
Epson is another good choice.

I am currently using a UMAX 3400 USB that I bought maybe a year ago? It is a flatbed scanner (8 1/2" x 11" that has a removable lid, for photos, books, and even models (I scan N scale items by laying them directly on the scanner glass under the lid!). My first scanner was also a UMAX (1997) cheap, reliable, and very easy to use. It came with Adobe Photoshop LE and I either use that or MS Picture It to scan and edit.
