Has anyone noticed a problem with the PhotoPoint site today?

This afternoon I received a response that said I wasn't "authorized" to access the site, then this evening the site did not respond.

Hank,
I just tried to get in and no luck. It looks like their server might be down or some other issue, so its not just you!

All I got was the image outline with the alt tag of the server being down on Thursday for routine maintenance. Looks like it's not up yet!

I got the same message from Photopoint (they are joining the list of formerly "free" sites. :( )

Since this topic is most likely going to take a turn down the photography (as well as free photo storage website theme), I am going to attempt to transfer the topic to that thread. Feel free to pick up the issues there!

I too got the e-mail so responded to them that it is their prerogative to start charging for service but it is mine to stop using them so all the pictures I have posted at Trainboard will disappear. Too bad and sorry for the inconvenience but I will now wait until Trainboard starts hosting pictures

I received the same email , it seems there is no such thing as a free site lol. I certainly won't be using the service once payment is required.

Yes, I have already indicated to them that I am ceasing being a member. The cynicism of their attempts to persuade users of the wonderful money saving benefits available through continued fee-paying membership is mind boggling and is an insult to everyone's intelligence.

I should think their membership world wide will plummet as a result of this.

Of course the reason for their decision is falling advertising revenues which itself is a consequence of investors' lack of confidence in dotcom companies generally at the moment.

Until the whole sector takes an upturn we are likely to see in increase in the withdrawal of all sorts of free services in the IT area.

I will be using Zing for the foreseeable future; have a look at it; it is very easy to use and doesn't put a banner up at the top of your pictures.

It's too bad we're going to lose a free PhotoPoint.

I've just spent the morning looking at Zing, Angelfire, Webshots, Homestead, Web Photos. Yahoo Photos, and PhotoLoft and I can't find a site that gives you a linking URL to an individual photo to include in a post like PhotoPoint does.

Yes, they all give you a URL to invite friends to look at your album, but if you include it in your TrainBoard post, you would transfer out to the photo site then have to come back to the post. I want to include the photo right in the body of the post.

Has anyone found a photo site that gives you a PhotoPoint-type linking URL to an individual photo?

There is a forum at Photopoint similar in look to Trainboard. Wow, are there a large group of unhappy users. The administrators comments are way off the mark as he believes a lot of people use photopoint to make money and therefore they should pay a fee. In my opinion they should have taken a survey of users as to what they actually use photopoint for. Oh well, what's done is done and I am out of there.

Hey Gerry!
If I'm following your question correctly try Honesty.com they allow image uploads from you to be posted on this or any other site. I first started using them for Ebay and still do.
Unless I've missed something, once the image is posted to this board it no longer needs to be kept on an image hosting site! Honesty.com gives you an individual link to your image.
Check it out an let us know what you think.

Thankfully I haven't needed PhotoPoint for any storage as yet. My server is flexible enough to allow me to store in excess of my quota. smile.gif
Still, it doesn't bode well that they are heading this way, though understandable they need to purchase more storage for providing a 'free' service. One thing I liked about them was no pop-ups, excessive advertising, or being a cookie insistant (read Homestead) site.
Hopefully they will see the error of their ways.

Gary.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give them a try. I've uploaded 4 images of my PWR N-Scale project and will try a post in the N-Scale forum. Thanks again...

Gerry M, if I understand what you are saying correctly, you should find no problem with Zing; I can paste the images actually into the Trainboard post where you can look at them at the same time as reading the text without having to move to a different web site.

I "copy shortcut" and "paste" the pictures into the post on Trainboard from the album in Zing in exactly the same way as I do from Photopoint.

Heh heh heh...You ever see what happens when a steeam locomotive runs out of water, and then gets a quick plunge in cold water? Ofr when a battleship or destroyer inadvertanly sets off its own magazine? KABOOOOM. Little pieces everywhere. Photopoint just may have committed this little blunder. Only advice: ask watash. Grab your knees and pray real hard!!!!!

Well, just got back form the PP Forum, and It is looking like a roit over there.

Here are some great quotes:

"Leaving like rats from a sinking ship"
"As the old German saying goes, other mothers have pretty daughters too"

I feel like somebody just tried to sell me a 1980 model power F unit at twice a Kato price(and boydid they lay on the sugar!!!).

Go Trainboard!!!

To all of you looking to pull out of PhotoPoint and post your RR pictures elsewhere, here is a site I ran across - "Guide to Free Online Photo Albums":

I finally figured out why I couldn't post a picture stored at Zing to this forum.

You cannot share a picture from their input area (called "My Pictures"). You have to move the picture to an Album first, then the URL will work when posted to Trainboard.

Right click the picture when viewed in the album, select "copy shortcut", go back to your post, put the cursor in your message where you want your picture, click on the "image" button below the message post area, paste in your shortcut into the URL window, and done (using the "image" button automatically wraps the /IMG code around your URL and saves you from typing it in manually.
