This is an attempt to see if I can post some photos on Trainboard.
If it works, I will post some pics of n scale American rolling stock in the n scale section.
If it doesn't work, its back to the drawing board!

Hi Ben,
You have the right code for posting the image, but you require to add the full URL. Try it again with the http://site.
Gary.

Ok Gary, thanks; I'm not quite sure what you mean but I'll try again (and keep trying with different variations until I get success).

Gary, I've now got as far as getting a little red cross inside a white square; am I getting there?
What am I still doing wrong?
What else do I need to do?

When you are picking up the URL to put into you note, are you using cut(copy) and paste? All it takes is to have just one character mis-typed to throw the whole thing off. Be sure you are using the whole URL, starting with the http and going all the way to the end. I usually paste the URL into the post or reply, then add in front and at the ends, with no spaces. Like this:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=76905&a=1282560&p=18452521&Sequence=0&res=high
Now click above on the edit icon, so you can see how the image link for this picture looks. I hope this helps.

Ben, I looked at the code in the one where the little red crosses showed up, and your code looks fine. The only thing I see that could be a problem is the lack of the type of file, such as "jpg" or "gif" at the end of the title. If the photo is xxxxx.doublestack.jpg you need to add the .jpg to the file.

Ben, you may also need to add /files to the url, depending how pics are saved. Keep trying, you will get there http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I'm lost - I don't understand cutting and pasting; I'll try what has been suggested about .jpg and then I'm giving up - I just don't think I'm part of the world that understands all these complicated systems - which is a shame as I now have a digital camera and was hoping to post a lot of pictures.

Ben,
I was able to access your photos on MSN. However, your photos are considered as "adult only", although I didn't find anything pornographic in these train photos... Maybe you have something to do so that they are classified differently !
Now, I'm not sure that the photos that you placed on this site are accessable from the outside. Just in case, I'm trying to show one of these photos below, to see if it can be displayed :

It does not work, although this is the actual URL of the photo, so I assume that the photos placed on this MSN site cannot be viewed outside of the MSN site itself.
What I suggest is that you place your photos on another site, such as Photo Point which does not cause any problem and so that anyone can view them.
Ben

I've already tried PhotoPoint, before I turned to MSN, and I couldn't even upload the photos to photopoint from my own computer.
I don't know if its because they are digital stills taken with a mini DV video camera rather than with a digital still camera; I wouldn't have thought that should make any difference.
The software supplied with the camera allows one to capture the images and store them on the computer and I was able then to save them on a floppy disc and upload them to the MSN album I had created - probably unnecessarily complicated but the only way I could make it work.
Everything else I have tried doesn't work and I just feel completely helpless; its always the same with computers, everything I try to do doesn't work even though I waste days of effort on it while everyone else just sails through and achieves the right results almost in their sleep.
I've lost interest now in getting any pictures onto Trainboard unless anyone has any really bright ideas; what I think I will do is store them in my MSN album and draw members' attention to it so that if anyone is interested, they can easily have a look for themselves.

After killing the insipid cookie and java requests my firewall was freaking over with MSN...
Ok, Ben, before rolling over on this baby, let's have a look at it....
As Jean-Louis pointed out, some servers do not allow thrid party access to the images. MSN may be one of them. Trainpix is another.
Looking throught the html code, I can see where your attempts have been in posting the image location on MSN. I found I had to log in to Passport, or whatever they choose to call it these days, before I could access your images. I failed to do so as I couldn't remember my password - D'oh!
Regardless, let's pursue the Photopoint problem.
The images from the camera capture are most probably .jpg files. This will pose no problem with people seeing them.
Assuming you have your account set-up with Photopoint, try the fllowing once logged in;
<LI>at the top of screen, select Upload Photos
<LI>I suggest you follow Step 3 - Easy Upload and follow the prompts. Note you can upload any number of images up to 10 in this mode. 3 images is the default. Have your images on your hard drive in a seperate folder marked uploads or something like that, or an easily recognisable folder. The browse function looks at your hard drive, or floppy. Use whichever you are comfortable with.
<LI>when the upload is complete, that additional small window that opened on screen will close by itself. You image/s have been uploaded into your incoming album.
<LI>look in your upload/s by clicking on the 'incoming photos' link. You should see a thumbnail of each image.
<LI>you need to move the images from the incoming photos album to one of your 'normal' albums. Do this by scrolling down the page and using the 'Organize my photos' link. Choose the images you want to move by ticking in the box beside the image and then choosing the album you wish to move the images to. Select move.
<LI>when the screen refreshes, select return to album list and when it refreshes, then select the album that has the images you moved. You will see them there in thumbnail form. Select an image.
<LI>when the image appears, right click the image and select copy shortcut. This will save the images location on your PC's clipboard.
<LI>in your TrainBoard window select where you wish to add the link to your image in the post. Right click and you get the choice of copy, cut, paste and delete. Select paste - this will add the images location to your TrainBoard post. Add the UBB code for adding a image like you have tried with the MSN site.
This is a photo I uploaded to run through the process. It is my first posted to photopoint! http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1170548&a=11015580&p=38318413&Sequence=0&res=high
Hope this is of help, Ben.
Contact me personally if you would like to have you images uploaded in a different way, say to my site, so you can show them.

Ben, can you send one of them to me as an attachment to email? If so I will figure out how to get it on this site. Don't feel like you are alone in trying to understand this stuff. I have spent more time being frustrated than being successful. You just have to keep trying and usually you will find a brute force method to overpower these geek programmers. My email address should be attached, but I will repeat it:

Hey Charlie.
Is there a way to set up a field like the username and password one above and the user just puts the URL in there and hits a button that says POST IMAGE.. ???
This question adn problem is putting a lot of people off posting images. I have no probs with it, but as you see, Ben I bet has a few dozen excellent images that he could post...
BEN..
If I was you I would open an geocities, xoom, etc account and upload the images there, and then just create a link here to there..
I have no ideas on photopoint, or MSN (but if its like anything else MS...) but the GEO setup is easy adn the URL is a lot shorter and simpler.
http://www.geocities.com/bens_images/PICTURE_NAME
that easy!

Wait Bird Butt, isn't he supposed to put his photo on his website, then type it something like this:?
http://home.flash.net/~watash/lioneleng.jpg (no such photo exists)
http://website.server.net/wwwfolder/photoname.jpg
That is how mine work. Look at mine on the "your never too young nor too old" forum and edit my post on the two black and white photos of my childhood Lionel layout with the Royal Gorge swinging bridge and Grand Teton mountains.

Watash, you can have a website using the free website services of Geocities, Xoom, and the like, or a specific photo server like PhotoPoint.
Or you can have the photos stored on your own ISP's server, depending on the terms of service you have. I have 10meg, though I can stretch the friendship to 20meg easily, as part of my service plan.
I think what Bruce is getting at is having a service like Geocities, or PhotoPoint, that allows us to upload photos to TrainBoard's server using a simple server-based method, rather than having to have them uploaded elsewhere and running into the problem of not being able to view them via image links (ala Trainpix).

Thanx everyone for your encouragement and advice; I will not give up and will have another try, but probably not until the weekend as I don't quite seem to have the energy or inclination when I get home from work on weekday evenings!
I will also try and email sample pictures to those who have asked.
Thanks again; the friendly help and encouragement that members of this board offer is one of the most important features that make it a very special community of enthusiasts and one that I am very happy to be part of.

ok, its nearly midnight but having now managed to create an album in PhotoPoint I am going to try again to post a sample picture here.
If it works, this is a photo of New Barnet Station, a rather run down outer London suburban station on the former GNR/LNER East Coast main line, a few miles from my home.
