Those of you who have layouts, what is your theme or emphasis? I have a small switching layout, with a run around and two small yards. No real purpose, other than move cars. How many of you run narrow gauge layouts that are continuous running? Or do they have a purpose, like move raw material from a mine to a crusher or interchange?

Greg - I have a continuous HO standard gauge that has some switching operations at various sidings. But my primary emphasis will be with HOn3 logging and mining operations with interchanges with standard gauge shortlines which will interchange with with the continuous loop. I have a long ways to go before I can actually move any cars over the HOn3 rail. Time seems to slip away as I work all summer long running a local tourist train, then spend most of the winter doing maintenance on the old steamer! But it's fun, and I wouldn't trade the work for anything. smile.gif

My On30 "Stray Horse Gulch RR" is getting closer to reality. I'm done with the plans and started the framework. It will be a continuous loop with several sidings and a line up to a mine. It's mainly to watch my trains run through Colorado scenery. Any operation will be from the town to the mine and back.

Conrailrad, how big will your layout be? Good concept IMHO. A little switching and railfanning too. The Bachmann stuff is pretty nice and a little weathering would be the crowning touch. I have seen the new production Shay in pictures, but not in person. A very nice looking engine.

Gee, I don't know how I missed this thread. :D

I have a small 13' x18" modular layout with turnaround modules at the ends. A classic dogbone. I was torn between Northern Pacific and Union Pacific so I made it a ficticious interchange between the two. Over the 7 years of this layout, I have leaned towards NP, and only have 3 UP locos and 1 UP caboose.

One day I hope to put a Nn3 logging line on a module. I have always been intrigued with Nn3 for years but have yet to buy any. ;)

GRAVE DIG!

So anyone got any good logging layouts in HOn30 running?? Photos? Plans?

What size would be a decent layout in this scale to run from trees to mill, without getting to Paul templar's level .. I'd only depress myself trying to do that!!

Im thinking of just something smaller to run logging, but as with most, dont have much room to go with - as it would be a second layout... Could you do much with something like 4fx3ft or am I dreaming?

Greg,

My layout is approximately 2,000,000 years from completion BUT I do have the plans drawn up and the purpose behind the scheme. When one models the Colorado mountains in the late 1800s, there really is only one purpose: move ore out, move goods in. My layout will consume the entire garage when built and will be point to point (I have considered one continuous run loop in case I ever have an open house kind of thing...). Because I ended up wih a really nice Bachmann Climax I most likely will use it and the Porters to move ore from the mines to the C & S main for switching.
Best,
John
