I want to put a spark arrester on my C&S smokestack. I have the kit. My concern is removing the handrails on the side where the cinder tube goes down the side of the boiler. I need to take the handrail off and then, somehow put in a new one that bends around the tube. Any suggestions on how to get the stock handrail off and what I should use to replace it?

Conrad, see if you can find the new magazine "O Scale Trains, issue #3."

On the cover is a picture of such an addition to a Bachmann 2-6-0. The gentleman that did it is on the On30 list and would probably be more than happy to help. It does make into a nice looking engine. Good luck.

Thanks for the info Greg. I checked the website and found issues 1-3 are sold out. From the picture on the cover of issue #3, it looks like he put the tube over the hand rails. According to "Narrow Gauge Pictorial VI" on page 75, the tube runs down behind the hand rails on old #22.

Conrad,

Do you have any pictures of the prototype that show that detail? That was a detail I wouldn't have caught. Also, Joe was talking about putting back issues on line of the OSN. If you like, I could copy the article for you, since the magazine is sold out.
