View Full Version : A Tale of Horror....I ordered from All-Gauge...

Fellow railroaders, here is my sad tale so that you too may be forewarned of the pitfalls of internet ordering from companies like All-Gauge. Caveat Emptor.

8/04/00 - Placed order via All Gauge Internet web site. Order #553.
8/09/00 - Sent follow-up e-mail to HOBBIES@ALLGAUGE.COM, requesting to know when the order should be expected to arrive. Received no reply.
8/14/00 - Called 1-888 phone number and spoke with All Gauge representative who said order had been shipped and should receive in the next few days.
8/18/00 - Called 1-888 phone number (again) and spoke with All Gauge representative who said order would be shipped in a couple of days (apparently I was lied to on 8/14/00).
8/23/00 - Called 1-888 phone number (again) and spoke with All Gauge representative who said order had been shipped and I should receive it in a couple of days.
8/29/00 - Called 1-888 phone number (again) and received recording stating that their 212 number was changing (what that has to do with their 1-888 number is anyone's guess).
8/29/00 - Sent follow-up e-mail (again) asking for carrier name so I could track down the order if it had indeed been shipped.
8/30/00 - Received reply stating that the order has not been shipped (big surprise). All Gauge reply stated that order would be shipped free (nice thought if it would really happen) and should receive it within 1 week (by 9/06/00).
9/08/00 - Still have not received order. E-mail’ed All-Gauge (again), because apparently I was lied to (again) on 8/30/00 by All-Gauge representative who said I would receive it by 09/06/00.
9/09/00 – Received the following reply from All-Gauge, whining about how too busy they are to serve their customers: “Dear Mr. Landreth, We apologize for the slow responses, we have moved to a different location and the shipping of merchandise was very hard for us. We just started to ship merchandise on 9/7/00. We are not trying to abuse you we just want you to wait for while and sometime this week you'll have something in your hand.” Yeah…right.
9/13/00 – Still have not received order, nor do I ever expect to.
9/14/00 - Placed order with Internet Trains instead.
9/17/00 - Informed Model Railroader magazine of the disinterest displayed by All-Gauge, since All-Gauge is a frequent advertiser in Model Railroader magazine.
9/21/00 - Received response from Cindy Schultz at Kalmbach (Model Railroader's parent company) regarding e-mail I had sent about All-Gauge: "...they are not currently advertising with us, due to their non-response to a complaint we have on file".
9/26/00 - Received order from Internet Trains. Now THAT's service!

Welcome to today's America, run by youngsters with keyboards who don't have a clue what the hardware you are ordering even looks like. Old stalwart SEARS has gone to this now, and I had a very similar experience with them, just trying to buy a lousy plastic fuel tank for a weedwhacker!! This is what we have come to, mostly thanks to these computers which allow us to enjoy stuff like communicating with other railfans.

Hey, things MUST get better! http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Things like this really annoy me http://www.trainboard.com/mad.gif

I just received an order for some spine cars, and as always, immediately sent an acknowledgement of order, with an estimated completion date, and a 'thank you'.

If there are any delays, I contact the customer and say so. And always contact them when an order is shipped.

This is the way it should be done! People like the above get internet traders a bad name, but we are not all like them http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Communication has never been easier, so there is no excuse for not keeping customers informed. I have been commended on numerous occasions for my good service, and I would rather have this than complaints http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Eddie, welcome to TrainBoard http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif And thanks for the warning.

I agree with Alan. There is absolutly no excuse for doing business in any way other than as he describes.

Here is another positive example. This one was for a computer part. I needed a memory upgrade and ordered on line last Sunday afternoon. On Monday morning, I had an acknowledgement which included the ship date (that same Monday) and the UPS tracking number. The memory modules arrived yesterday, Wednesday.

Thanks for the welcome Alan. I'm still learning my way around the internet and this sure looks like an interesting site. The spine cars are beautiful but no layout until this winter. Glad to hear you are doing additional cars. Still can get to your homepage but can not download pictures etc.-some message about java pops up-any suggestions? Thanks

We had experienced some trouble with "All Gauge" this past Christmas. My wife ordered some items for me for Christmas from them and said she would never do it again. "All Gauge" lost the order once, had a backlog another time order again was lost. They also had a pipe break and had some flooding and they disconnected their computer and moved it so it wouldn't get damaged. She ordered this stuff in early November. She finally got it on December 23rd.
