Thomas Movie

The upcoming Thomas the Tank Engine movie looks like it should be great for the kids - maybe even an introduction to railroading.

I know my oldest - now 12 - used to watch all the Shining Time Station shows and the Thomas videos. My youngest - now 5 - has picked up on the videos and has a great deal of fun with her Brio (and lookalike) trains, setting up her own little layouts and so on.

This would be a great opporunity to expose more youngsters to trains, as well as being a super family movie.

My #1 son (Sticky monk's brother), was weaned on Thomas the Tank Engine! He soon knew by heart, all the words to go with the pictures, so we could not skip any when reading them to him http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif We have almost all the original books, about 25 years old! Plus a couple of records, with the original narrator, Johnny Morris.

All this was wasted on Gary, as he is not the slightest bit interested in trains, now http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

Well, first let me say that I like all of the narrators, but am partial to Carlin! My youngest son (now 3), and current fireman on the Colorado and Southwestern (our HO layout), loves Thomas and his pals and when the commercial was first aired he went APE http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif This will be his first movie theatre experience, so I hope it will be worth while. Hmm, I should see this on cheap Tuesady http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif I was intending to go, although it didn't look like it was heavy on plot.

I was raised with a pull train, and then at 7 months I started with Brio. I think I was one of the few children on the block with a point to point system, and a 'proper' yard so my trains could be sorted, heck, I had an intermodal yard! Oh, those days were cool, I left Brio when I was about 6 for a shiny, POS Model Power Train set that I have now sold off.

If you have got those original Thomas books, that is the wide, but thin height books, you are giving your age away again. Mind you, so am I 'cos I can remember the same books that my parents got for me in the early fifties.

With reference to the kids, a friend of ours has built a model of the Island of Sodor with a good representation of the various engines. He has carved the faces out of Miliput and made some very cretiable reproductions. When he put the model on show, you could not get near it for the kids, And heaven help the person who put the wrong engine with the wrong train!!!, ... or made the wrong move with the wrong train.
A chorus of voices would shout, "He/she did not pull that train" etc etc, you get the idea. Hope Disney got their facts right before sending the film over here.

I actually like Ringo as Mr. Conductor, although Alec Baldwin is not bad.

MR had an article on the production of TTTE, several years back. As usual, it was short on any truly useful information.

I think the models used are quite large, like #1 scale or larger. We had a full documentary on the making of Thomas stories several years back, but cannot remember the details. The eyes are radio controlled, I think.

I think they were large scale (No. 1 ? )for the ease of filming and modeling. The article in MR was the usual commercial for a product. I think it's even, Carlin and Starr, but i think the Carlin trainstation stories are stronger.

I liked Ringo the best... I love the modeling in the daytime shows..., great depth and perception... I love the people, they look like O or G scale people to me...

umm well i just went to see this thing with my wife and 4 yr old. it's ok if you're little but dry for grown ups. every voice is different than the 1/2 hr tapes. the only voice is alec baldwin and he isn't very good, not like carlin. they have some stoner british kid as mr. condutors cousin and to me this ruins it. also the story is too chopped up between shining time station and thomas and sodor. even my son began to lose interst after awhile. peter fonda " easyrider himself " wasn't too bad. all in all if your little it will be cool to see. have fun.
