Here is how I shoot most of my modeling shots. Outside with a blue sky to light the shadows and real sunlight to light everything else. I never can get the colors right with indoor lighting and antique film. :D :D The real horizon helps me too.

Mark,
Beautiful scenes! Nice photography too!
Instead of toning it down, you might consider painting a few ripples so it won't be glass smooth.
The viaduct is awesome work.

Hi, all,
Been really busy at work, so no time......
However, reaching back into the archives, here is a interesting, international shot:
June 2002- the Kato Showroom in Tokyo, one of the displays:

Pretty cool!

Pete-
The above were taken 10 minutes after pouring. I would like ripples, but probably should let it dry first.
By the way, there was a very faint odor when mixing. Now, there is none whatsoever. Product is Famowood Glaze Coat at Home Depot. If I had the right stir and it dries well and reasonably fast, I would recommend it. It does not pour like water, it is more like the consistency of Elmer's white and water 70-30.
Price is $17 and change for a quart total. I used half for my N-18 river and had mix to toss after it coagulates.

Mark, I like the way your river starts off shallow and drops off deep in the middle.
I blew off the yard work and got most of what I had planned done, that being utility poles, stringing cables and a chain link fence. I also worked on a couple of "mill houses". We used to have lots of them on Main Street near the textile mills, but they are all gone.

It's Arbor Day on the layout! I worked on some Forest in a Flash product (actually, better named Small Grove of Trees in Two Afternoons and Evenings). I was pleased with the way they turned out, but I think they are too tall, even though they measure out to be scale height accurate. What do you guys think?
I used F in a F Birch/Aspen, Sycamore, and Sugar Maple, all fall colors.

Nice stuff everyone. For me I finally finished my last Cotton Belt GP-30, painted rails and decoder so I decided to run a few trains and take the four, 2 SP and 2 Cotton Belt for a test run.

Also in the go was the F7's. Great units these are.

Tom and Mark,
Thanks. The whole weathering thing is new to me. I tried to dust on a chalk blend. Looked okay until I brushed on some Dullcoat. Then it got way too dark. So I took a toothbrush dipped in alcohol and tried to scrub some off. Seems like I get better results by screwing something up then trying to fix it.
PS - Mark, You had me fooled for a minute. I saw Mr. Beck  and thought....Hey My Dad doesn't do trains. smile.gif

April 11th, 2005, 02:43 AM
Must be spring, there are new trees everywhere....
With a little help from Smokey Bear and the dedicated hard work of the U.S. Forest Service, the Coconino National Forest is now a forest. 6 square feet ate up 120 trees real fast. The Heiki trees are a great value but very uniform, so the Model Power trees give a little added variety.
http://www.railimages.com/albums/johnbreen/agn.sized.jpg
This is the first time I've ever gotten to put trees on a layout so I'm pretty excited about that part.
http://www.railimages.com/albums/johnbreen/agq.sized.jpg
THe ponderosa pines that I need for this area should actually be a lot taller so in the future I may add some HO pines to the mix. For now it will have to do.
http://www.railimages.com/albums/johnbreen/ago.sized.jpg
I'm really impressed at how different it make the scenery look ones trees go in. Deffinately a big improvement.

It's been a while since I posted anything here. Since we awoke to snow in New Mexico, and a cold wind, I planned to photo all the new stuff on the layout. Except that I was reminded that I hadn't figured out my taxes yet, nor my estimated payment for the same dreaded date five days away.
So, here's my scratchbuilt Coast Guard cutter. Yep, the paint scheme is inaccurate for my era, and the top of the mast stuff is also wrong--but those details have been broken off as I've leaned in to work on the deck above, and I have the accurate radars and radio stuff on my workbench.
Off all the ships I've built, this is my favorite.

Those are old Atlas kits that I weathered. I think they are still available.
I don't use plastic building kits anymore. I prefer lasercut building kits. They're much easier to modify and weather .

Yes and no!
The layout currently consists of two pieces of plywood resting on top of two drafting tables with the remains of the first layout still in a few places. I currently have some EZ-Track down in the shape of an oval. There is a small yard on one side. The Water Tower Diorama is currently hooked into the track.

Whew, you can at least run trains round and round. That is my therapy most of the time when I don't have modules set up somewhere. I have a door with an oval of Kato Unitrak to run trains. It is amazing how well that works for me. :D :D

I know what you mean Russell.
Right now I am re-examining the plywood and seeing if I can use it in the new layout. Originally I was going to get rid of it and go with a narrower but longer layout. Seeing how almost two years have past and I had not gotten to the benchwork I might as well try something with what I have. I can always extend it later.

Thank so much folks for your kind words. Until today, I used for my weathering mainly an airbrush and some drybrushing. After I read several posts at modeltrainsweathered.com (http://www.modeltrainsweathered.com/forum) , I tried for the first time to weather a woodchip car with powder. For the future, I will definitely remain with this method. If you want to know how I did it, please go to this forum because my mother tongue is german and my english is very rudimentary. It will need a whole day work to explain in english how I weathered this car graemlins/headscratch.gif graemlins/226.gif
