March 23, 2005 I had to put down my best friend Sydnee. Sydnee was always there when I was working on my trains. She would seem to know when something wasn't going right and would motion for me to put her outside. She knew that it would work out after a little break. She was 12 years old and became really sick in the last few days of her life. I really miss her; hopefully we will be together again some day..... http://www.railimages.com/gallery/bradlobregt

Chooch, I know exactly how you feel. Our black lab is getting there fast. She's 10+. On Saturdays she is in the bedroom putting a cold nose on my arm until I get up. She knows Saturday is our day for errands, and she gets to ride along.
Sometimes I think she's got more sense than my 14 year old daughter. ...Change that, Of course she has more sense than my 14 year old daughter.

It's pretty coincidental I rushed our dog Sam to the verterinary hospital suffering a life threatening bowel infection, I've only slept 4 hours last night as we were up calling the vet for progress, we are hoping he is goig to pull through although my train purchasers will have to be suspended I'm already facing a bill of $800 for treatment so far but he is worth it.

Understand exactly how you feel! Our little dogs are precious to us. We treat them better than we do our own health. Great companions. And such an integral part of our days. When one has passed, we've felt it deeply.
Best wishes!

From a fellow canine lover, my condolences. I put down my 14 year old shepard this past summer and it was quite heartbreaking. One can only pray that we are reunited with them at some point in our "journey".
God bless you.

Just an update, Sam is doing well and looks like he will have a full recovery unlike my VISa that now looks terminal lol.
Thanks for your prayers.

Brad,
I am sorry to here of your loss. I have been through that myself, more than once, and I know how it feels. It is a very hard thing to go through.
I have also discussed Paul's dog with him and I am glad to hear that he is doing better.
As much as it hurts to lose a dog or cat (I don't like to call them pets because they are so much more than that to me), I think it is important after a time of mourning to get another.
I often hear people say after the loss of a dog or cat that they will not get another one because of the pain of losing them.
A friend of mine recently got a little cat from the local shelter and after just a few weeks he died from some common ailment that kittens can get.
He did not get another one becuase he said it hurt too much to lose him
I think that someone that can provide a good home and years of happiness for a little dog or cat owes it to them to do that.
I drive by the animal shelter every day and see the little cats looking out the window. If I could take care of more than I have now I would gladly do it. In our town, the animal shelter is right across the street from Wal-Mart and we buy our cat food there. Sometimes when I buy food for my cats, I get another bag and drop it off at the shelter (I refer to it as an orphanage).
To think that someone might adopt one and then not give them a good home is sickening and I regularly hear of idiots that do just that.
We had a news item recently about two women that were living in a house with 25 dogs, and another about a couple that had over 40 cats in a trailer house.
Brad, I hope that when the time is right that you find another friend that will be with you for many years to come.

I've had to do the same thing a few times and understand what you feel. Sydnee was a good looking companion.

chooch,
I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. Had to do this in the past, so I feel your pain.
I hope with time that you can find a new friend to spend your time with. I don't know if I could ever go without a furry critter running around the house (and sometimes driving me absolutely insane).
Take care,
Todd

It was 3yrs. ago this month I needed to send
my cat (Love) to her final rest. The Vet couldn't
do anything for her; than let her rest for good.
Everyone called her my wife. In some ways she
was... she was there for 3 bouts of bad phenomia, a broken shoulder blade, many cars.
Also, thru all Public Schools (Jr. High & up), my
College days, several jobs, even more
girlfriends, and a handful of homes.
She was my companion for 20yrs.
Recently, I've been thinking of looking for
another companion, but I may be still to picky.
I guess I rattled on to say...
I understand.
...and thanks... I needed to type this.

Sorry to hear about everyones good friends passing away.
I have two indoor cats and a indoor dog who really belongs to one of the cats.
I also have some outdoor cats I take care of, four of those. since my outdoor cats have outdoor food I also get strays who drift in for meals.
I have a local cat care society vet who helps me trap and fix all my cats so I do not get any more new homeless cats in the heighborhood.
there are lots of dogs and cats, some of them mature trained animals who's owners decided they didn't match the furniture or some such thing, who really need loving homes. Get out there and get a new friend. It is a statistical fact that people who own pets live longer lives. smile.gif

BTW Chooch, Sydnee was a terrier mix it looks like. Very cute dog. It really is heartbreaking to lose people like that. Pets really are just small people with huge hearts.
My mother passed away before xmass. We plan to return to Italy and scatter her ashes in the Izonso River. Because they do not allow you to transport animal remains out of the country we mixed her dog Obi's ashes in with her so they can still be together. Her dog looked much like yours. they are a very sweet breed.

The missus and I had a cat named Fluffer- she was a Turkish Angora, and white as snow. W rescued her from my in-laws' neighbor kids, who were more intent on hanging it from a tree  graemlins/cursing.gif graemlins/cursing.gif graemlins/cursing.gif graemlins/cursing.gif . Crap like that makes me wish for spaying & neutering of certain young adults to prevent gene pool contamination.
Anywho, we brought her home, and she was with us from 1988 until 2002, when she died of cancer up in Colorado. The wife had her cremated, and her ashes are now in a decorative tin box with her picture on the outside.
FLuffer was queen of the house, and took years to even accept the presence of our sons when they were born.
Since then, we've adopted a gray longhair male who met his untimely demise under a car's wheels (that one broke our hearts, because he was a real laid-back cat); a tortoiseshell queen cat who was around the house we moved into in Sherman; and a small kitten who was a stray, cold, wet, beat up, and found refuge under the wheel well of my van at work. I brought that one home, and she has since healed up right nicely- everybody loves her. even my cat-hating son.
Charlie hit upon something when he mentioned the animal shelter-chances are real good that there are cats & dogs that are there because somebody down the line didn't spay or neuter a pet. As cute as kittens or pupppies are, sometimes there are too many of these for homes, and they could come to bad ends (see the above story I told you).
Animal shelters will have adult animals spayed or neutered, and shots up to date before they are adopted out. If you get a pet somewhere else, when they become adults I recommend getting them spayed or neutered (and for cats, remove the front claws to preserve the furniture). Some vets will do this procedure for a reduced fee- check with your local animal shelter or Humane Society for details.

I'm a blubbering old fool when I lose one, so I understand. It's been a long time since I've had to put down a dog, but that was one of the most painful decisions I've had to make..
Jeanne and I have never had a dog in our 25 years together, but the succession of felines always brings fond memories. The 6-lb female black and white who would terrorize Black Labs and chase my neighbors' poodle up their Christmas tree; the cat that was truly green in color; our present 12-year-old clowns (30-lb male and 25-lb female) who are probably half-Maine coon cat and half bobcat, and many others.
I think the good times and memories we have of pets adds to the richness of our lives.

I can relate. 10 years of companionship I lost my best friend. Changed the focus of my whole railroading concept when I renamed my railroad after him. I keep a picture of him in my album too.
