I have a 18-20" space I need to bridge..
I want a steel bridge to do the spanning of the underpass, but what can I use to make a wood-pile trestle to connect the steel to terra firma? Anyone make wood trestle bents? I want an American-style bridge for the steel span. I kinda want a mix of the steel and wood.

Hemi,

I'm not sure if you are asking about a specific model available or how it would be done on the prototype, but I had just downloaded a photo off the net of just such a situation.

The steel span rested on half of a concrete pier, and the other half had the beginning of the wooden trestle, whereas some VERY short bents took up the short (maybe 3-4 feet?) distance from the trestle deck to the concrete pier.

EDIT: Found the link:
Bridge on the TRE in Dallas (http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=132543)
Side Shot of Bridge (http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=129306)

I'm sure the parts to do something like this are available. I know there are several wood trestles available, and you could either modify some Atlas piers or just scratchbuild them. The steel span could be just about anything.

EDIT AGAIN: Didn't notice this was Z, but I'm sure somebody is doing a laser cut trestle in Z, right?

That's EXACTLY what I want. Thanks, Doug!

If you're looking for trestle bents and such, Black Bear (http://www.blackbearcc.com/Z_kits.htm) has some jigs and whatnot. You can also find some preasembled bents on EBay sometimes.

"Anyone make wood trestle bents?"

I don't know about ready made bents, but I have heard good things about Black Bear's Jigs and kits.

Hope this helps.

I have a space about 10" at least that needs a trestle, maybe a jig would be best. Any others? I saw a vendor at the Calgary Supertrainz show that had kits for Z trestles.

I'm thinking about using the Black Bear jig, and sourcing my own wood.

Staining before assembling a good idea? Glue doesn't like stain, and I tend to be sloppier than most..
