Anybody use this stuff? I thought I would give it a try since all the big names in model railroading seem to use it. I mixed some up and did'nt like the texture to it since i've always used plaster, but I covered a couple mountains with it and it still had not dried the next day, just cold and clammy! graemlins/headscratch.gif I mixed it just like the directions said and thought it would be hard in a half hour like the bag said, but it wasn't!!

I use it occasionally and it sets up in about 30-45 minutes.
If you added too much water it could delay the set time substantially.
Stay cool and run steam..... graemlins/cool.gif

I have used it quite a bit. I have switched over to Celluclay for most of my landscaping needs.

One of the guys in our ZBT club used it once. It has a neet texture, but it took a few days to dry. We just use that Woodland Scenics plaster towels over foam now. graemlins/wink.gif
I used to use Celluclay over aluminum window screen. It's good stuff, but also takes a few days to dry.

I used Sculpt-a-mold and am quite happy with the texture that it gives. Here's some more photos of how that looked under construction:

And the resulting layout:

Hope this helps!

I've seen Sculpt-a-mold come out nicely and also very poorly. It has to be mixed very well and is sensitive to getting the proportions just right.

Haha! That's what Jeff Merril from our BAZ club did on one of his new modules, and it came out with just that Martian Landscape texture. He turned it around by using that Woodland Scenics scenery paints, and it actually looks real nice now.
I remember seeing a module like that at the NTS in Cinci, that was a bit on the orange side, that reminds me of what you describe Bryan, but with a little dabbling of Woodland Scenics scenery paints, it can come out looking really convincing! ;)

I've not seen the material that you guys are talking about in person, but just hearing about it, maybe you could just say that you're modeling that red clay down in the southeastern states! graemlins/wink.gif It's everywhere - even on the RR tracks!! :D ;)

-Robert I know the one of which you are speaking. I believe it was a quarry? That one wasn't mine. Mine was the end loop that was a dark red, almost maroon color, with no landscaping whatsoever. I'm still contemplating building a Z Mars Rover, and just calling it my "fantasy" module.
"Trains on Mars".......yeah, that's the ticket. graemlins/wink.gif
Hopefully, it's going to look a little different by Philly. Hopefully.

I have one of those Disneyland Castles from the King Ludwig set that I am going to build into my fantasy end module, and I was thinking of using some of Jeff's Sculpt-a-mold to blend in that big plastic base to look more like rock.
I think that might be a good application for this stuff, as it shrinks slightly while drying, so it should work better than plaster for my application. Well, I'll give it a try anyways.
