View Full Version : What roads do you model?

What roads do you guys model past or present? About the closest I get to modern is several MRL units with the majority of my stuff being from the past. Most of my roster is made up of BN stuff around 1970-75 as I'm able to have alot of GN,NP,SP&S and CB&Q hanging around. I also have 3 Mopac,2 D&RGW,1 WC,and 2 UP units that will be stripped and painted(happy happy joy joy!!)

My son and I model ATSF/BNSF (me), and UP (Matt) in N scale, inspired by our visit to Tehachapi and Cajon areas in 1998. Matt models BN in HO.

Model mostly PRR. Born and raised in Altoona, Pa. which is the main reason for PRR.
Tried to stay modern with that area by getting some Conrail units but now it's Norfolk Southern! Lost count, but now have approx. 45 to 50 PRR engines of all class and makes. Only a few dups. My model layout hobby has turned into somewhat of a collection!?
Also running two lashed Norfolk Southern SD60's with consist of 28 container and trailer cars. About as modern as I can get for now.

I chose to model the Southern to keep my expenses down! Don't find as much SOU stuff as PRR, UP, or ATSF (which I like as well). Plus gives me the incentive to custom decorate. I also model Seaboard Air Line, and smattering of Atlantic Coastline.
I've started getting interested in 1990s - present roads, so I have a smattering of CSX and NS; however, until my budget (paycheck!) increases I'm going to stay focused on the mid-60s to mid-70s southeastern roads.
Boy, those BNSF units look nice in BNSF's TV commercials!

It's the BNSF for me guys. I'm a Santa Fe Nut, http://www.trainboard.com/tongue.gif but Burlington Northern is my second favorite railroad. So when they merged, I delt with the loss of the SF but now I really like the BNSF. I have a "Home Road" called the Aransas Odessa & Western Railway. When I came up with the concept for my railroad, SF and BN jointly owned the AOW. I always said it was the "Great SF/BN Experiment". Little did I know they would really merge and make my modeling world an easier place to model. Now if we can only get the manufactures off their duffs and make more modern locos and cars. The time is always the present, just like the "Utah Belt", on my railroad.
I like other roads too: CB&Q, NP, GN, SP&S, FRISCO, MP/TP, WP, MKT, KCS, IC, GM&O, CM&W, CN, WC, CNW, GW, GWW, MSt.L, NW, SOUTHERN, NS, WABASH, NYC, B&O, EL, and NKP. So you see, I'm pretty flexible.

I love modelling the current stuff, BNSF and UP and all the colors that go with them. You can almost run any of the large roads anywhere these days.
I am about to start a new layout based upon the Camas Prairie in the 70's, if I spend enough time away from the PC!!. It gives me a chance to run GP9s etc and use some of the excellent microtrains / intermountain older box cars etc.

Also, one BNSF -9, 'cuz it was a good price. I have steamers and GP9s as well as -9s running at the same time. In my RR world, nothing ever gets retired or sent to the scrap heap. I agree with others. No engines retired. My PRR layout gives the initials RR the name of 'Rainbow Railroad'. PRR -> Penn Central -> ConRail -> Norfolk Southern(CSX). I can lash up combinations of eras. Or I can call it PPCN?
At least the kitbashing is easy, black to black. Even thought about putting the initials 'PRR' and 'NYC' on the ConRail diesels.....but decided that was a little too much.

Starting a Freelance layout based somewhere in the midwest (Minnesota flavor). I grew up and now live again in the Twin Cities and I like modeling the "local" roads.
My time frame is modern with some carry over of old diesel & steam units (GN & NP only)
Main roads are as follows
BNSF (heavy BN) and some ATSF (BNSF is main road)
UP is my second main road with trackage rights with BNSF. Of course this will allow some of the fallen flags for UP as well.
Some CN, CP, Wisconsin Central
Of course I am still planning the track plan and benchwork. I am just collecting rolling stock and locos right now. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

There is lots of railroad history here. I just moved back into the Twin Cites last fall (Born and raised here). Are you from the US originally? What drew your interest in US roads?
Gats
April 7th, 2000, 04:52 PM
No, I,m not from the US - Aussie 110%.
I first saw N when I was 9 years old and saved until I could buy the Bachmann set I saw in the hobby shop window - American outline, of course.
Over the years I moved into and out of the modelling game and when I came back, I had begun working in the rail system here. I was drawn to modelling US roads probably because I couldn't go out and touch it, and my workplace is primarily commuter which I am not really interested in. Also, Australian N was in it's infancy here and I didn't possess the abilities I have now.

Hi,
I've had to restart my N-Scale layout again since I've moved recently so I'm starting from scratch. I have lots of B&M,Budd RDC's, two RS-3's, and one B&M painted GP-40.
I'm planning a freelance railroad based on the Cape Ann area. Mine is called the Enfield and Eastern and connects Enfield, a mill city to Eastport a seaport with a dock, passenger terminal, etc.
I'm also planning a ficticous connection with the B&M proper (not Guilford) and with another ficticous shortline the Cape Ann Southern.

I think that this happens in real life too. I remember seeing D&H lash-ups going through Lawrence to Portland complete with N&W cabeese just before Guilford painted them all drab gray. What a site... a MEC U25B along with D&H Alco's, and B&M Blue Geeps.

Maxwell, Do you have trains from all of those roads on your layout? I decided to justify the existance of locos from some of the fallen flags of the BN because I used to model GN, NP in HO Scale.
Here are the roads I have finnaly decided on (updated from my earlier post).
BNSF - Includes BN,ATSF,NP,GN, and a couple of CB&Q units.
UP - Includes SP, MOP, WP, C&NW
Wisconsin Central - branch line operations, very limited.
Other roads to visit sometimes - CN,CP/SOO,CSX,NS and other appearances if locos are available.

Holy brought back from the dead post :)
Well let's see the last time I posted on this thread was in 2000. I was still in my first marriage living in the house I later "Donated" to her and was planning on building a large N scale layout with BNSF, UP as the major roads with cameos from others.
Fast Forward Six Years to 2006.
I am remarried (Marriage 2.0....the upgrade) Live in Saint Paul in another house. I am planning on building a medium sized layout in N scale with BNSF and UP as the major roads with some medium CP traffic and a train or two from Amtrak. So I guess nothing has changed in the model railroad sense of things :)
Well ok, my rolling stock collection is up by at least 900%. Back then I owned maybe eight locomotives. Today I am pushing 100. with well over 300 cars. My knowledge level is ten fold as to what it was six years ago despite not having built the layout. Most of this is tinkering with temp layouts and of course Trainboard has been a huge education for myself.
I have always been interested in the big class one lines. However, lately I am finding myself fascinated with smaller lines such as the TCW and Duluth Misabee (which is now CN). This is dangerous thinking for me as I have a huge investment in my class one lines and no room to even think about doing a shortline in combination with my class one line. hmmmmm maybe I could have a cameo of the TCW or DM&I :)
DANGER DANGER :)

I forgot to add that I went through four differnt jobs during this same time frame (laid off of three of them one a year). I went from a decent paid IT nerd in the civilian sector to serving AGR in the Army National Guard as a Mortar Sergeant / Unit Administrator. I also moved four times since that last post (been in Saint paul since 2002. Bought the current house July 2005.)
And I wonder why I have not built the layout yet :).....geese, I have not really pondered this but that is allot of change in six years!! :)

I model D&RGW in ~1987. I can/will fudge the date a bit to fit certain trains as well; like the Rio Grande Zephyr. I wasn't around when this topic started, so this is my first post. My original plan was a BN-based line, generic scenery, etc. I moved from Minot, ND to Cheyenne, WY, and the focus became the BN Funnel from Sandpoint, ID-Spokane, WA. After a railfan trip to the Moffat Route with a good friend, my focus suddenly, radically changed. I now am a hardcore D&RGW nut, and I will also have heavy BN traffic/joint operation trains as well. I still have a bunch of BN stuff, might as well not let it sit! I still like BN, and I love their prdecessor roads. I only regret I never got to see any of the roads I model in action before the mega-mergers. D&RGW bought SP in 1989, and UP took over SP in 1996-ish. Missed that one being in college. GN/NP/SP&S/CB&Q disappeared in 1970, and BN diappeared in 1997. Never saw either road in pre-merger operation. I moved to Minot, ND in 1999, but I wasn't much of a train nut then. I regret not shooting the solid sets of BN SD40-2's I saw, unpatched.... I regret not shooting BNSF Dash-9's when they were in clean, solid sets. I got tired of seeign them.
Moral of this story:
Shoot what you can, when it's clean--it likely never will be again!

The Grey and Grandure is a freelance shortline connecting to them at Grandure. Managment of the GandG policy regarding road names:
If it looks good, Run it!
So you will see a fulll spectrum of motive power and freight / passenger cars.

My Avatar pretty much says it all... CB&Q, Rio Grande and anything with Pacific... except Union Pacific ;). I also have a fair amount of Santa Fe and Great Northern. Most of the stuff I have is pre-Amtrak (prior to 1970) and I prefer the passenger trains of the 1950's to 1960s. I bought a bunch of Tunnel Motors; so, I also dabble in more modern (1975-1985) freight service.

BN on a fictional Sub-Division that links Boise, Idaho with Spokane, WA. I also run SOO (took over all of MILW) and a fictional shortline (Jamestown and Snake River, lets me run all the Alco power I want). I also have at least one piece of pool power from all the major class Is from 86-89. Adds a little color.

My small, freelance Midwest granger railroad in N scale is a fictional line owned by the Milwaukee Road. Soo Line has track rights. My hobby within the hobby is collecting cars of Midwest roads, 1955-1975; all run at various times.

I model the Missouri & Ohio,a freelanced bridge route connecting the Missouri Pacific with the Baltimore and Ohio.Set primarily in southeast Missouri between 1970 and 1979,this concept has allowed me the freedom to run what I want on the M&O,while maintaining prototype standards for the Mopac and B&O.The research that goes into such a scenario, including writing a history for my road, is one of the most enjoyable facets of this wonderful hobby. The Missouri & Ohio is a fallen flag however, absorbed into the Missouri Pacific on August 2, 1979.

I primarily model the Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe, Texas & New Orleans and the International Great Northern. In other words, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific by the names they were called in this part of Texas back in 1951. I also model some MKT, KCS, CB&Q and D&RGW.

I model the Chicago, Pittsburgh & eastern. A regional carrier that operates from Indianapolis, IN to Pittsburgh, PA to Atlantic City, NJ with trackage rights over the New York Central to Chicago. The era is the late 1960's.
The layout is based in the urban/suburban area of Pittsburgh and is actually just an industrial branch off the main system. This part of the layout will serve many downtown business as well as several industrial complexes along the rivers.
The eventual plan is to have at least 2 massive steel mills on opposite ends of the layout that will generate traffic in both directions off the layout to pointed east for export and west for construction and other uses.
Being a steel mill railroad there will be a lot of dirt, a lot of grime and a lot of railroading! Being a Pittsburgh railroad, there will be a lot of bridges, a lot of river-side industry and a lot of switching!

The avatar tells the story:
First there were german trains, mostly Deutsche Bundesbahn in the 50's and 60's.
Now it is either german or american trains, mostly Pennsylvania, but also NYC, N&W and New Haven.
The scenery must be shared, i.e. there is a german town, and in another part an american town by DPM. Industry is not that different. So far scenery is plywood, so it is not yet specific...

Lots of contemporary modeling and lots of western themes! I freelance a shortline subsidary of the WM which runs from Cherry Run, WVa to Strasburg Jct. VA (trackage rights over the B&O from Winchester south). Cutoff time is 1950, anything after that is just too hard to believe 8<). So why do I use Sante Fe diesels? Because I have a fleet of pre-1950 models all painted black with the classy zebra stripe and can block out the Sante Fe heralds with a marking pen and I get a ready made matching paint job. Then when I get my steam fleet running I can give them to my modeling friend who models ATSF. We'll see how this works when we get there.

I model a couple different roads. In town I like paved roads, out in the country dirt is the way to go. Sometimes along the roadbed I even use a gravel road.

CB&Q is my main focus. I used to stretch that into the future (BN and BNSF) and Westward (parent roads GN and NP), however with the expanding selection of RTR equipment, I had the luxury of scaling back to my primary focus (CB&Q in the 50's and 60's). I also have a fondness for the CGW (which shared trackage with CB&Q and IC along the Mississippi river in Northern Illinois). I'll be first in line to buy a Kato NP North Coast Limited if/when they produce one. I already have the slumbercoaches, now I just need the rest of the train :).

Pretty much have always been a Hill Lines modeler since I grew up around them. At one time I included Milwaukee in among the NP and GN. A number of years back I switched over to modeling the SP&S with a couple of the early FAs and an Atlas RS-3. Since then my modeling interests have narrowed alot with the SP&S being the primary road and GN running over it to reach the Oregon Trunk Line. The rest of the motive power (about 30%) is logging roads that connect with SP&S. Except for cars almost all NP power is now gone and two Milwaukee locos are basically my museum pieces. Some run through power from CB&Q and some CP units with trackage rights make up the rest.

I primarily model Great Northern/Northern Pacific (1950-1970) with SP&S, CB&Q and WP on the side. Additionally I model some BN/BNSF up to, but not beyond, 1998.
My home layout roadname is "Great Northern Pacific."

For me it's primarily the Great Northern and especially anything in Big Sky Blue. Although, I can never pass up anything with the Northern Pacific or SP&S. I was also modeling the BN but I have decided to try and limit myself to pre BN to keep from going broke. The problem is that the manufacturer's occasionally put out something that is just too excellent to pass up. Joe
