To all-
Just so everyone knows, Atlas has the new pictures of this new locomotive on their web site! Just go to www.atlasrr.com (http://www.atlasrr.com) and look under products and scroll to where it says SD35-new pictures! I've been waiting a long time for these to come out! I especially like the Southern Railwayhi-nose units(duh)!
Just thought everyone would like to know...the expected release date is May 2000.

Thanks, I know a couple of people who are also waiting for them. I'm not, but I will have a look myself anyway http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

You're right! That SOU unit looks great! The N&W unit looks pretty good too. SOU units -- must buy. N&W -- maybe -- will be good for that "just after merger" look! Now if Atlas would just produce some high hooded GE units like the U23B or the B23-7. Oops, should've been on the wish list with that one.

StickyMonk-
The Accumates are MT compatible, and they also fit in the standard MT 1015-1016 coupler box. I bet they operate very good if they clank knuckles with Micro Trains's couplers. I asked that same question on the Atlas forum and I trust that Paul Graf told me the right answer. Hope that helped.
P.S. What a unique screenname!

The Accumate couplers are going to be the standard coupler for all ATLAS N scale very shortly.ATLAS has been fussing with these for about 6 months now to get them to their standards. http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

Good to hear about the new Accumate couplers on Atlas and with Kato now fitting knuckle couplers (though not automatic) could this soon mean an end to those horrible Rapido couplers? http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

The new Katos look better than their original, but are out performed by ANY bump or automatic on the market. I use their originals on all my passenger equipment (Con-Cor, Atlas/Rivarossi) and they work fine. http://www.trainboard.com/cool.gif I know there are some that say the new one won't work well with the current MicroTrains couplers. http://www.trainboard.com/mad.gif I hope the Atlas coupler is a winner! I like a lot of their cars, but get tired of swapping out the trucks. http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif

I'm a BNSF man, so I can't have any http://www.trainboard.com/frown.gif
I hate it when a good model is produced that I can't use!
But we will have some on our layout, as Matt models UP/SP http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

I hear you Alan. I'm a BN/Soo modeller and though BN didn't have them, Soo leased 10 ex-NS units in '87 from EMD. Now, do I need 1 or 2?
Anyone know if the wheelbase is correct for a SD38?

Gats if you kitbash one a little, new grills romove the center fan you can make a BN SD38P these were converted from ex CSX and VMV (nee sou) SD35's http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif if you do that good luck

Thanks SM... I hope you are happy now. http://www.trainboard.com/wink.gif
Not only have you sown the seed for a SD38P, but also a TEBUC6 to go with it. http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif
So many projects, so little time! lol

Do we think these units will run better than the SD60's and GP40's in the turns (wihout slowing down)?

SD75MAC-
I've never had problems with my Atlas SD60 or GP40s slowing down on curves. This intrigues me very much? What are the radii on your track centers? Just curious.

12 and 18. Atlas was aware of this problem, as reported on the other "n" lists.

SD75MAC-
How can an Atlas GP40 have problems going around a 12" and 18" radius curve? It was built to the standard 9.75" radius. Not only that, but it's a four axle locomotive. Do you have any details on the locomotive around the trucks (ie bell, speed recorder cables)?

There was a reported problem with interference with the frame or sumthin'. I just decided to let them sit, instead of making the modifications or sending them back to Atlas.

SD75MAC-
I have two Atlas GP40s and an SD60. I had (HAD) a layout with a 10" radius curve and neither had problems negotiating it. Did Atlas report that problem to the public or is that what you found out from truobleshooting and from calling the company?

The problem was identified on other n-scale list & my own experiences. Atlas addressed it in their forum and on that list. The problem is that some units experience a noticeble slowdown in the curves. Can't remember if it was right or left curves. On slow speeds with DCC, it is quite apparent.

The proublem was discussed at length on the Atlas Forum. It did not effect all of the 40s and 60s but only a random few.I have had no trouble with any of my Atlas units ever. Maybe I am just lucky. http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif

I model the BN also but there will be atleast 1 MRL unit roaming my layout. I can't resist what a great paint scheme!

I also love the paint scheme, could I have an excuse to run one in southern California?!!

I think the MRL units are low nose now. Does anyone know if this is right and if it is when the noses were chopped?
Catt
April 4th, 2000, 08:07 PM
The MRL units are now low nosed. If memory serves me right(get old ya know) Paul Graf said that on a re-run they would most likely do the newer (low nosed) version.
