What would be the best way to go from 3/16 thick cork roadbed down to the subroadbed foam board? I have a double track main on cork and I want to lay my yard flat on the foamboard, can I sand the taper on a piece of cork ? or is there a better way? graemlins/220.gif

In the past, I've sanded down cork. It wasn't really hard to do. Perhaps these days, someone has a better technique?

Try using a sanding block, a 2x4 about 4" long with 150 grit sandpaper wraped around it will work well. You can sand cork in the same manner as wood. The more pressure the more you remove.

Good Luck

It would take quite a bit of sanding to build a smooth transition from cork to plywood. I have used plywood as the transition by cutting out a length about 2 feet long and adjusting each end to lay flush with the road bed with a natural vertical easement.

Two ideas:

1. Use a free-floating peice of plywood to transition between the two levels as was suggested. This is an excellent idea if you can firmly secure both ends.

2. Knock off the edge of the cork roadbed and then fill in between the two levels with plaster. You can use a straight edge to guide your work. Depending on your plaster skills you'll either have good results or a mess. If you make a mess it's not hard to knock the plaster out and start over.

Use a 12" trowel to keep it even, and apply it in thin layers. Build it up slowly and you should be fine.

Thanks guy's, I think I might try the plaster, I was thinking about this but wanted to know if it was ever done. One other thought, has anyone ever tried foamboard for this. I was thinking I could cut a piece to width and length, then go on the band saw and saw the taper on it?? It might need just a little sanding to make it perfectly smooth. graemlins/220.gif

I just love replying to myself! After I logged off yesterday I tried the foam method. If you have a bandsaw this works great. I was even able to match the side slopes off the cork. It went quick and easy, all I had to do was a little touch up sanding!! graemlins/220.gif

Ken, If I bought a camera I wouldn't have any money for my trains!! graemlins/LOL.gif What I will try though is take my pictures with my old 35m camera, then go to wally mart where they will put them on a disk for only $3. Then I can get them in the computor and load them into Rail Images. It sounds good but I have never been able to load anything into Rail Images. Just a dummy I guess!!! graemlins/220.gif
