start of layout plan

Hi all,
Since we're going to start building the benchwork for the layout this weekend, I thought that I should start on a track plan.

There will be stuff in the middle, I am still planning that out though. Yard on Right, industries on left.

Any comments/suggestions are welcome

approx 17'x4' but it will only be 30" deep in most parts.

I'm not really sure about that...

using this plan can someone help me design a yard area? I want a servicing facility as well.
You don't have to use the yard tracks i put in, but I would like it to stay on this side.

First thing is that you are going to have to start your yard approach off of the other side. most of your sidings are only 9" long. Not much room for trains.

I'll repeat some stuff I posted to another thread: think about what you want to do. Do you want to watch trains run, or simulate prototype operations?

Write a story about your railroad. What does it do? Why is it there? where is it? where does it go? what's around it? etc etc

have you checked out some of the planning advice on the Web? this (http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/~smithbf/BFSpages/LDSIGprimer/TOC.html) is one of my favourites.

One of my countrymen (I'm Kiwi and Aussie) has good advice (http://www.felgall.com/rail/index.html)

If you want to see trains run its cool, I really like that layout. There is plenty of long straight track to watch go. that is me personally though. I want to work hard building it by doing the scenary and do less work to watch it run. Your layout design is all good with me even if there is no story with it. The stories are very nice too, but I love watching the train go and go and go. I like to see them crash too. LOL
Here is the layout I am going to build starting this week also
From left to right it is 13ft. from right to the bottom it is 8ft, and 4 ft on the ends of both sides. There will be 8 switches, two bridges for trains and one bridge for cars. In the river it will go down about a foot - a 1 1/2 feet. It will not go out as it appears in the drawing. I will add my train yard separately on the bottom left. I will be running mostly Union Pacific and some southern pacific.

If you move the first switch into the yard over to the left at least 2 track sections then you can ladder in right handed switches up as far as you want to go. Just keep all the straight parts of the switches in line. Just an Idea.
