My son has a HO scale Class J engine with smoke capabilities. When we run it, it smokes fine but then it will "pop". Is this normal? Me being in N-scale, I don't know much about the smoking engines. graemlins/headscratch.gif

Dan,
Thats the heating element in the smoke unit, it should "pop" an then a stream of smoke come out of the stack, this is due to the heating of the smoke fluid! The fluid basiclly boils kinda of an it will "pop" like that an then go into smoke from the loco from the heating of the oil being like a small combustion chamber an the heat, with the oil and burning the oil causes noise once the smoke fluid hits the stage of creating smoke, inother words its reached its hottest point, without becomming smoke.

This is the only logical reason I can think of! (I too have steamers with smoke units in them, that do the same thing).

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

As I recall, Watach wrote about a potential health hazard posed by breathing that smoke. I can't remember where he posted it in here and I think it was a couple of years ago too.

Wayen .. if you see this you might restate your thoughts on this subject.

Your more then Welcome Dan! But I know the exact little "pop" your meaning....I would have to say its the smoke fluid reaching its hottest point till it produces the smoke itself! Then it will pop like a bubble an then pour out smoke from being heated...

Bill as for Watash having said something once about it, I too recall him saying about it being a hazzard, been to long ago to know when or what topic it was in etc.... Watash would have some great things to add here thinking of it!
