My local shortline, the New England Southern, has a GP10 that seems to be their primary workhorse. I've not seen an HO GP10. Any ideas on: </font> What company sells a GP10 in HO?</font> (if there is not answer to the above question) Which model is going to be the best base to kitbash into a GP10?</font>Thank you all for the advice.

EMD didn't build GP10's, so it sounds like a designation given by a rebuilder, my guess is that it's an upgraded GP9.
Is there a pic anywhere online so we can take a look?

I don't have any photos of the specific locomotive, but I found a pic of other GP10s (http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/gp10/gp10.html) if that helps.
It would certainly be easier on me if all I had to do was repaint a GP7 or 9 shell! smile.gif

The designation GP10 was used by many roads for rebuilt GP9s, but I think the "official" GP10s were the ones built at ICG's Paducha shope in the 80s. Your best bet would probably be the Walthers chop nosed GP9M or possibly the Proto low nosed GP18 as most GP10s were chopnosed in the rebuilding process.

The problem is that because a GP10 is a rebuild, the designation of GP10 means nothing in modelling terms.
Having a pic of a Conrail GP10 is only useful if the NEC GP10 was a Conrail one. For example BN and ICG/Paducah also had geep rebuild programs that turned out units called "GP10", and each program produced units to their own standards, which were all different from each other (just as if you look down those Conrail machines, there are some major differences from each other, even within the same railroads rebuild program!)
I'm fairly positive that it will be based on a GP7 or GP9 unit originally, but you'll need a photo of the unit to find out what needs to be changed, and what is correct.

<font color="336633">There have been several GP10's built by various people, so if you know who the rebuilder was that might help to find the right details for the loco, the best starting point would be a Proto 2000 GP7 or GP9, as these are good shells and have a seperate walkway which makes kitbashing a lot more easy.</font>

Thank you all for the help! graemlins/097.gif
I'll just have to bring the camera next time I visit their yard. I would have needed to in any case to get the paint colors and lettering.

To add to that already written, I'd try to ascertain the history of the unit. Being in the NE I'd like to assume it was a Conrail rebuild but you know what assumptions usually do... :D
AFAIK there are no model GP10's made for the above mentioned reasons. From a prototype viewpoint there are many variations on a theme. For an example go to my site (link below in sig) and look at the TC&W units. There are 4 distinct variants there - two BN rebuilds and two IC/ICG rebuilds - and you will note slight difference between IC/ICG 'class partners'. Note that these units have flat noses not the slanted versions which were EMD factory supplied low nose conversion kits (the same used on factory GP18/20's).
There are a few articles kicking around about building these in HO. Check http://index.mrmag.com/ and use 'GP10' in the search field. Most you will find will refer to the ex- IC/ICG Paducah-built units. I will defer to the HO modellers for the units to use for your unit - my bag is N (and you will find an incomplete article on these within the projects section of my site).
Good luck with your research and kit-bash. It's one of the fun parts! smile.gif

The NEGS unit is an ex CR unit. All CR GP8s and GP10 were rebuilt by Paducah. If you want to catch up on these motors check out icmodelers@yahoogroups.com There is an HO part manufacturer called Cascade Pacific that has the detail parts to convert a high nose unit to a chop nose Paducah Built Geep.
Formerly of Hooksett, NH on the New England Southern.

With the looks of this loco in reality to a model. I'd suggest using a Mantua or TYCO GP-20 shell for a base and fitting to a Athearn or Proto powered frame for the running capabilities. But the Mantua/TYCO GP-20 shell is really close to the GP-10 chop nose! HTH

Those Conrail Units have a lot of character. Note the Bell hung on the hood as well as the broom sticking through the nose grab irons in CR 7562
