What is the difference between regular turned brass flywheels and the new Athearn hexed flywheels? Why do they improve operation as stated in the ads?

I have heard of these, and cannot think of any engineering reason why they would be better http://www.trainboard.com/confused.gif I would have thought they would be worse. Hope someone knows the answer!

They get rid of all the looseness in the drive train. It's just like the NWSL drive train replacements. It can only be an improvement and i hope Athearn does this with all their models which i don't think they are doing. They are doing it on the latest Dash 9s though.

I should have said originally, the flywheels are not 'hexed' themselves, they have a hexed connector for the 'dogbone' drivetrain.

Thank goodness that is cleared up! As a model engineer, I could not see any plusses in using a hex shaped flywheel http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

In a e-mail reply to a e-mail Athearn sent me they said there are plans to redo the GP40-2 drive in the near future. I guess this would include the GP38-2 , GP40-2 ,GP50 and GP60 because they all use the same frame and drive. Athearn does have differnt frames with differnt fuel tank sizes but all the frames are swapable in the later GP series. So you can put a GP38-2 drive/frame in a GP40-2 with little or no problems.

I'm glad to hear that they do plan on doing the GP frame... The new drivetrain is quite improved over the old couplings.
