Proto 87...

Anyone else headed in this direction? I'm currently trying to convert my car fleet over with wheelsets but haven't ordered the replacement axles for any locomotives yet(Got to special order em from Caboose).

The new layout i'm working on will be built to these standards, but unfortunately there's not too much hooplah over this stuff that i can tell.

For now i'll use the NWSL sets for the wider trucks but i'm hoping Kadee would come out with a cheaper wheelset that is P:87/64 compliant... They claimed they were looking at it.

im going to go proto 87 with my steam era stuff as it will all be new and seems the right way to go, im just not sure how they will run on peco code 75 track i will have to test them first b4 i go ahead and but lots

I'm going to handlay the turnouts, but there isn't any problems on the ME flex... Heck i could even probably lay Code 40 WITH spikes and it would still clear!

Concerning the trucks, Accurail and Walthers trucks don't look bad at all with the little bit of extra spacing. It's the poorer trucks like Athearn where it's noticable.

i dont use athearn trucks, i replace them with either kadee or walthers, although some have recently been replaced with proto 2000, i dont think it wil be ong b4 kadee also bring out proto 87 trucks..... i hope

Now, just because I'm a N-Scaler, doesn't mean I don't have anything pertainant to say. Have you ever tried the Kato HO scale trucks? I'd swear they're motorized! I had an Accurail 40Ft. box car that I put these trucks on. WOW! I'm not sure they will work with the 87 wheels, but they sure did roll!

If Kadee brings anything out in the next 6 months i'll be shocked... I don't doubt they will make the P:87 wheels, it's just when will they get around to it?

Once the new layout is underway all cars with Athearn trucks (ie. Athearn cars)will lose them in favor of either a correctly spaced truck or a more realistic one...

Oh yeah, i don't have no friction trucks either, i'm modeling very current stuff.

i got some of the Kata roller baring trucks and they are nice but i dont like the shape of the wheel face compaired to Kadee ones

Those trucks have only 2 outside springs also if i remember right. Don't see too many of that style nowadays...

in 98 when i went over to Tehachapi and Cajon we did see quite a few, mostly on tofc and also quite a few boxcars, also one short tankcar

I don't see too many here! Were the TOFC the 28" wheels? I know those trucks are similar but i don't think they are the same. Maybe if i see some specific cars in service. But for now it's not a consideration.

i must admit i only got them because i wanted to see what the working roller barings was like and i got them at a good price

i have just had another look through my photos and have only found a few that i can see with 2 visable springs, 1 CPR TOFC (looks like a convertion) 2 40' UTLX funnel flow tanks, TTX 5 unit 48' all purpose spinecars and 53' spinecars but thats all i can see from photos

i just realised about the proto 87, im going to have a problem converting any steam loco i get to it, as steam loco wheels are not going to be easy to come accross, whats the wheel thickness? i could always try turning them down....... on a spare first
