If we are talking about the real thing, then I would go with a 2-8-0 decorated in SRR green and pulling a string of 20 or so hoppers or pulpwood. In the model realm, I would recommend a P2K GP9. Great detail and good drive, as well as affordable for any newbie who can mow yards. These models are highly detailed and stand up to the rigors of constant handling. I have quite a few and enjoy every one of them, and best of all the have scale hoods!!! Good question and till next time ,Justin May

easy everyone should own a C636.... oh hang on a moment no one makes one http://www.trainboard.com/mad.gif hmmmmm in that case id say a P2k GP20 great loco and can be used in almost any time frame either on hot trains in early days or yard duty and local work in modern times never thourght is say that would rather have been an alco but cant say there is any out standing ones made yet......

wheres all the C636's????

I would have to reccommend either a 4-6-4 hudson or a mountain with an elasco feedwater heater made by PFM or Tenshodo, they're a mortgage payment but worth every penny.

If someone were going to only have one
engine, it would be a shortline. In that
case, either a 2-8-0 or a GP-7 depending
on the era modeled. No high-stepping
passenger loco, or super-high horsepower
locos; just the basic easy to maintain
workhorse.

The Proto 2000 GP 7, GP 9, or GP 20's are excellent locomotives. My GP 20 is wonderful.

Well, after a lot of thought, I would say an E-8. No engine could look any better than one of the Frisco racehorses so if you must have only one, that would be the one

That's what I like Charlie .. an unbiased opinion! http://www.trainboard.com/wink.gif

Well .. seeing how I'm partial to steam locos, and having to chose from my stable I'd have to vote for the 2-6-0 Mogal. It is versitile for both freight and passenger service .. can negotiate tighter curves than it's larger, heavier sisters. But I do like the 2-8-0 too. It's a very difficult question for me to answer 'cause I love em all! ~wink~

I would suggest the Atlas Alco RS1, RS3, RSD4/5 for the simple reason they run smooth.
Well, that and Frisco had eleven of them,
from the AT&N. I have one on my layout in
Frisco colors.
For all-purpose freight handling, I'd suggest the Athearn GP38-2, again in Frisco
colors (could be that SLSF had 146 GP38s in
all), but then again I'm prejudiced http://www.trainboard.com/smile.gif

Well Bob, I guess that just proves that there are different tastes around. Those are good suggestions that you make but as you and I know (and maybe the others will learn) it's most important that it's Frisco first!

I'm a big RS-3 fan myself!

For switching cars in the yard I'd say the Atlas S-2 is smooooth.
For a local I would agree that proto 2000 GP-18 is a very realistic engine to watch and operate.
For the mainline I'm happy with Athearns' SD40-2. It's tough to pick just one!!
