I'm sure you guys have heard that Athearn was going to retool the SD40-2 to compete with Kato's, and many have been wondering what the new-and-improved Athearn would look like. Well, check out www.onerrave.com (http://www.onerrave.com) they have some pics of the new Athearn snoots, as well as pics and info on other new items announced at a recent hobby show. Click where it says Railroad Telegraph, then scroll down to the info and links to pics. I must say, it looks very nice! The tabs on the sidesill to hold the shell to the frame are gone, as are the molded-on grabirons and lift rings. They also filled in the area of the pilot underneath the coupler, and even added a nice buffer plate detail. Thev've even improved the frame and drive! The version I'm really looking forward to is the post-1980, with the Q-fans, exhaust silencer and "bulging" extended-range dynamic brake blister. It looks really nice, and that style of dynamic can come in really handy, especially for modeling a late DRGW/SP SD40T-2. The new Athearn SD40-2 opens up a lot of modeling possibilites! http://www.trainboard.com/biggrin.gif
