PS 4750 18 rib covered hopper

Another new car in the making. This was sent to me and I didn't expect to see this fast of progress on it. Since grain hoppers are sorely lacking in S, it is a kit that will fill a void. So here is the message I got. Is there is any interest these cars?

So this effort does not drop out of sight on this hopper, we have at this time enough firm orders to have Kaslo Shops proceed with this car, we are in a very comfortable position of extend the offer to anyone still that would like to add a car or two or whatever to this order. I think there will be a note in the upcoming Modeling Guide concerning this effort on this car and extending the opportunity to order the car, so the name and number take will go on for a while longer. I certainly appreciate the support we have gotten with this car and certainly look forward to running them in the consist. To try to avoid confusion, as to where this car is actually coming from, it will come from Kaslo, but in an effort to speed the process up and take some of the headaches of sorting orders out, we will manage and market this first initial order through DMK Scale Models, 700 S 4th St, Rogers, Arkansas 72756

This looks similar to some the Northern Pacific had about 1969. When were they first built? I'm probably thinking of the wrong car?

That's a *really* common car type, a great choice for a model. Us lucky HO (&N?) types have had the Intermountain one available to us.

Boxcab, I think the NP green ones were PS4740's, they had a flat top rather than the curved roofline of these. I think the 4750 was a 70's design.

Athearn does a fairly nice 4740 in HO, but I'm not sure it's available in any other scale. :(

A variant of the PS2-CD 4740 and 4750 was produced by Precision Masters and later Red Caboose (bought PM's molds) in N Scale. The 4750 models weren't based on PS-built cars but on those built by Ingalls Shipping, Berwick Forge and Foundary, and another that escapes my memory, which were based on those built by North American Hopper who basically copied the PS design prior to it being sold to Trinity Industries.

The Intermountain cars are a PS 4750 model, I think of the later design.

A major spotting feature between the 4740 and 4750 is the ribs - 16 for the 4740 and 18 for the 4750. Also, there's a few variations in the jacking pads and bolster end plates depending on who built it and when, and the fibreglass hatch patterns.

Great info guys. I've been watching for these cars at work, and there is a whole lot of cars that are real similar. Even the PS versions had variations from year to year. Until I started looking closely, they were pretty much all the same car in my eyes. Now I have to get detail shots and be very careful of what I'm shooting. :D For those of us who model the Western roads, these cars will be a welcome addition.

No problems! I did a fair bit of research some years back on these very cars and had a lot of input from C. Scott Chadwick (?) who is somewhat intimate with these cars.

Also, I have one of the Society of Freight Car Historians booklets on covered hoppers sitting in storage half a world away. :(
